Absolute Building and & Construction are delighted to join Checkatrade

Absolute Building and Construction are delighted to have been accepted on to the ‘Checkatrade’ scheme.

Checkatrade is a nationwide register of tradespeople which allows members of the public to check detailed reviews before they hire a contractor.

The site contains detailed information on each company on the scheme and more than 6 million people used the web site last year to find reputable tradespeople in their local area.

How it works

Checkatrade is a free service and it works by providing consumers with access to reviews of individual contractors before they make a selection. Once their work has been completed, they are encouraged to provide their own review so the general public has constant access to the most-up-to-date feedback on our work. In essence the scheme allows the people who are having work done to continuously monitor its quality.

In order to be accepted by Checkatrade, we were put through an extremely vigorous selection process. This involved being pre-screened, interviewed and vetted. We were required to prove our qualifications and accreditations and provide customer referees for whom we had completed work in the last 12 months, and our company history was examined in some depth. We were also required to sign up to the CheckaTrade Code of Conduct and Ethics and guarantee to always meet the CheckaTrade Standard.

Those companies wishing to register on the scheme need to be extremely confident of the standard of their work as the results of the screening will be made public – whether they are good or bad!

Although the process was long and extremely thorough, we were very confident as we are extremely proud of the standard of our work and the positive feedback that we receive from our clients. We are hoping that our Checkatrade membership will add a further level of assurance to our clients as well as providing them with the opportunity to share their experience of our work.

Association of Master Tradesmen

And don’t forget, we are also members of the Association of Master Tradesmen which is a consumer protection body and trade association made up of professionals in the building trade.

In August we were delighted to win a new piece of work to complete single-storey and garage conversion, directly through the Association of Master Tradesmen scheme, where our new client was able to post their requirements and select from approved local tradespeople to do the work.

We start the work in September and are delighted that our membership of these associations provides our clients with an easy and straightforward method to ensure that they are selecting a professional, expert and reliable contractor for their work.

Maximising space with made to measure bookcases and storage shelves

As master joiners we build lots of made to measure bookcases and storage shelves for your clients in London. There are lots of reasons to choose made to measure shelving over standard store bought units but one of the biggest reasons is the ability to maximise space.

Older Victorian properties in London are often filled with awkward spaces, especially if they have been extended over the years, or had loft conversions done. Made to measure shelving and storage units are perfect for filling these gaps. The alcoves either side of a chimney breast are classic places to put bookshelves. We also often build bookshelves to fill dead bits of wall where rooms have been knocked through, to fit under stairs or over the top of doors.

The trend towards minimalism has also seen a lot of people choosing made to measure bookcases and furniture in recent years. Having bookcases and shelves made to measure by a skilled craftsman means that you can get perfect joins between walls and shelves with any brackets and fixings neatly hidden away. If you are going for a clean minimalist look then this is very hard to do this with standard shop bought furniture. For customers who really hate clutter we also build a lot of bespoke cupboards and storage units which can fill awkward spaces and provide somewhere for children’s toys, and all of those odds and ends that never quite seem to have a place.

Maximising small spaces

One of the big trends we have seen in recent years is the use of made to measure bookcases and shelves in small flats and houses. With the high costs of homes in London it is now often worth spending the money to customise a small home to make it more efficient and liveable. A few well built pieces of bespoke furniture or shelving can really help.

In small bedrooms a shelf can be used as a bedside table where there isn’t room for a normal night stand unit. Similarly a wider shelf in a corner or alcove can double as a desk or dressing table.

Often just putting shelves in the right places solves problems. Having a set of high shelves leaves floor space free while providing room to put things out of the way.

In small flats and houses careful organisation of space is essential to make your life easy. Having a bespoke kitchen built can be very expensive if you have a standard family home but in a small flat with a small kitchen it can be pretty cost effective. With a hand built kitchen it is possible to really tailor the units and work surfaces to the space, making it work really efficiently.

The Beauty of Bespoke Joinery

The nation’s desire for beautiful bespoke joinery has seen a resurgence in recent years. Homeowners are increasingly opting for bespoke joinery and custom made carpentry in their homes over cheaper off-the-shelf solutions.

In this blog we take a look at why people are embracing the benefits of the bespoke approach and the advantages that it offers.

Clutter free homes

Today’s style of interior decor means that we often favour clutter-free, streamlined homes. The UK is seeing an increasing trend for open plan living which makes it imperative for our clutter to be neatly hidden away. We also use an increasing amount of technology and gadgets around the home, which we want to have on-hand whilst at the same time ensuring that wires and other pieces of hardware are hidden from view.

Engaging a bespoke joinery craftsman is often the best answer to deal with these storage issues. Speakers can be built into bespoke shelving or coving in the ceiling. TVs – which often become an unattractive dominant feature in a sitting room – can be completely hidden away. With ingenious bespoke cupboard solutions, mess and clutter melts into the very walls, as if it isn’t there at all.

Expertly designed joinery will help you to maximise your storage and use the space you have available as effectively as possible. This makes much more sense than trying to shoe-horn an off-the-shelf storage option into your home.

We have completed a selection of beautiful bespoke joinery solutions for our clients. Take a look at our Projects Page for some inspiration.

A wise investment

Many home owners initially balk at the prospect of the expense associated with bespoke joinery and wonder if they can’t make do with a cheaper option? The truth is that bespoke joinery may seem like the expensive option at first, but in reality it is an excellent investment.

If you want to make a change to your home without embarking on a major renovation, introducing some bespoke joinery can add a wonderful, personal touch. In the UK we spend a huge amount of time and money on our homes, so investing in a feature that is created to your own specific requirements guarantees that it will reflect your own style and personality. The objective of bespoke joinery is to be both practical and also aesthetically pleasing so it really can enhance your living space.

It is also true that storage is often high on the list of requirements for house purchasers. Investing in quality bespoke joinery can increase your chances of a quick sale in the future and even maximise returns from the sale of your property.

Tricky spaces

As those of us who own old houses know, they are very rarely built along straight lines, so it can be difficult to find ready made cupboards and other features which fit. An expert joiner will be able to measure, plan, craft and install the right bespoke solution which will slot seamlessly into the space available, and fully reflect the style of your home.

If you want to make the most of your space and you need to work at home, why not consider your own home office? The genius of using bespoke joinery is that you can create your perfect work space from even the very smallest nook in your home.

Here at Absolute Building and Construction we work on a wide range of bespoke joinery projects and will be more than happy to discuss your requirements. Get in touch today and we will be happy to help.

Which Home Renovations Add the Most Value in London?

With property in London being so expensive home renovations are increasingly popular. Altering the layout of a home to make it more efficient, or create extra space, can be easier and cheaper than trying to move to a larger property. If done correctly home renovations can also add extra value to your home.

Even if your primary motivation isn’t making a profit it is important to make sure the figures add up when planning a home renovation project. If not properly thought out it can be easy to spend more on your renovations than you would ever get back if you sold the property. For instance while kitchen renovations are one of the most popular projects for homeowners to do a HSBC survey found that on average they add less than £10,000 to the value of a home in London. If you have had even a quick look at kitchen prices you will know that you can easily spend a lot more than this on a kitchen renovation.

More Space = More Value

HSBC found that the top 3 renovation projects for adding value to a home in London were extensions, conservatories and loft conversions. These are all projects which will add more rooms and more space to a home, leading to a very simple equation:  more space = more value.

Renovation Project Value Added
Extension £52,813
Conservatory £43,889
Loft Conversion £40,357

How to add more space (and value) to your home

So, we know that the best renovation projects for adding value are the ones which also add space. How you add the extra space to your home will depend on your current layout and on planning permission. Obviously building a conservatory or an extension will normally require you to have some garden space which you don’t mind sacrificing. You will then need to look at what planning permission you may be able to get. It is always worth taking a look at who else on your street has done an extension and what type they have as this can be a good guide to what might be allowed.

Increasingly people are choosing to combine the features extensions with conservatories by creating garden rooms. Often these are kitchen, dining or sitting areas with a whole glass wall on at least one side and a clear connection to the outside space such as continuous flooring. This gives the you space you can use everyday while also letting the maximum amount of light and heat into your home.

Kitchen Extension with Connecting Space to Garden

If you don’t have the garden space to extend, or are more interested in extra bedrooms then a loft conversion is an excellent way to go. As a company we do several loft conversions every year and they never seem to lose popularity. What we are finding in recent years is that people aren’t just using them to add a bedroom for the kids. Increasingly loft conversions are being turned into master bedroom suits for the parents with their own bathroom and plenty of bespoke storage space. We also have clients who have turned their unused loft space into home cinemas, studies and hobby rooms.

Whatever type of renovation project you choose to do it is important to make sure that you understand the costs and the potential additional value it will add. Take a look at the local estate agents to see what similar homes to yours with an existing extension are selling for. Then, when you get a quote for your renovation project you can do a quick comparison to see how much extra value you will really be adding. Of course your home renovation project is much more likely to be a success if you have a good builder on-board to help you.
